The Biggest Critical Error I See Business Owners Make!
The Biggest Critical Error I See Business Owners Make!
As an internet marketer, I work with a number of business owners to revamp or optimize their websites. It seems that time and again they have delegated by abdicating full control of their online marketing platform. By doing so, they are now vulnerable to the whims, and financial stability of the web designer they use.
One of the things we insist on at Titan Marketing Solutions is that our clients must register their own domain names. It needs to be their account with the registrar, and their credit card information. We insist on the same thing with their webhosting.
Why do we do this?
In the summer of 2013, we took on a client, that frankly we should have declined taking on. When we asked him to register his domain and hosting, we were told that he did not want to have to worry about that.
Now fast forward a year, the domain name is up for renewal, as is the hosting. We had not dealt with this client in six months, and to be honest I am sure we were both happy with that fact. I did however, advise them that their domain name and hosting which was in my name was up for renewal, and assisted in transferring the ownership.
Now if I was an unethical, vindictive person, I could have charged whatever price I wanted to renew their domain name and hosting, and extorted a lot more money than it is worth as they had given us complete control over their domain name and hosting.
Whatever you do, make sure you own your domain name and hosting. If the relationship with your web designer does not work out, you can easily change passwords and transfer the maintenance to another web designer.
Now the second area where I see business owners abdicate control of their website is with the admin rights or access to your website. They do not want you doing anything to your site and will lock you out of it. They certainly do not want another internet marketer in there messing around.
It is your site. You should demand full access to it. Not a partial or restricted access, but complete control.
Here’s why.
I just took on a new client to redevelop and optimize his website built on WordPress. Something that just blew me away was the fact he was just charged $350 for his webdesigner to push a button and update his website. The process takes about thirty seconds, and that includes the time it takes to login to the admin area of a WordPress website.
Now if he had access and control of his website, he could have done it himself. However, in this case, the web designer had the control and subsequently was easily able to extort $350 from their client.
What is it that you as a business owner should do to not be held hostage by your web designer? Register you domain name yourself as well as the hosting plan that your website is on. Make sure you have all access and usernames and passwords.
You can decide who works on your website. You and your business are no longer held hostage to a web designer.
Finally, you want to maintain control just in case your web designer decides to close shop, leave town, or get and get a real job out of internet marketing. When their email address, their phone number no longer works, who do you call to update your website, or fix a problem?
Having access and control of your website and hosting allows you to pick up where your old web designer left off.
Three great reasons why you should not make the biggest mistake I see business owners make when it comes to their websites. , if you find yourself not owning your domain name and webshosting take corrective steps.. At the same time make sure you have full access to the administration side of your website. That way you will not leave your business vulnerable.
